L hospitalet du larzac

L'Hospitalet-du-Larzac is a village in the Aveyron département, perched on the Larzac plateau close to the Millau Viaduct, whose distinctive pylons can be seen from vantage points around the village, making it a well-known spot for viewing the structure. The village's name recalls its historical ties to the Knights Hospitaller, in a region steeped in Templar heritage, including the nearby fortified town of La Couvertoirade. The Larzac causse, a vast limestone plateau, forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site recognising the Mediterranean agro-pastoral landscapes of the Causses and Cévennes, and lies within the Grands Causses Regional Nature Park. The area is popular for walking, with trails crossing dry grasslands, sinkholes and traditional stone sheepfolds. The town of Millau, known for outdoor pursuits such as paragliding and rock climbing, is a short drive away. Local produce centres on sheep farming and Roquefort cheese, matured in cellars in the neighbouring village of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon. The climate is typical of the causses, with hot, dry summers and cold, windy winters.
