Nant

Nant is a small town in the Aveyron department, in southern France, nestled within the Grands Causses Regional Nature Park. Crossed by the River Dourbie, it retains notable medieval heritage, including old covered market halls, a stone bridge over the river, and the Sainte-Marie Abbey of Nant, founded in the 12th century, whose Romanesque church still stands today. The village, built from the limestone typical of the Causses, is well suited to leisurely strolls through its narrow lanes lined with old stone houses. The surrounding countryside offers excellent walking opportunities, particularly towards the Dourbie gorges and the karst landscapes characteristic of the region, with its rugged plateaux and deep valleys. The climate combines Mediterranean and upland influences, bringing hot, dry summers and cooler winters. Nant makes a convenient base for exploring the nearby Causse Noir and Causse du Larzac plateaux, as well as for outdoor pursuits such as river swimming, cycling and rock climbing. Local cuisine showcases regional Aveyron produce, including cheeses such as Roquefort, made in the neighbouring area.
