Badia a Passignano

Badia a Passignano is a hamlet within the municipality of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, set in the heart of the Chianti region in the province of Florence. It takes its name from a centuries-old abbey, founded in the 9th century and entrusted to Vallombrosan monks, whose church houses frescoes by Domenico Cresti, known as Il Passignano. The abbey and surrounding land now belong to the Antinori family, one of Italy's oldest winemaking dynasties, who cultivate the local vineyards and run the Osteria di Passignano, a well-regarded restaurant serving Tuscan cuisine alongside Chianti Classico wines. The countryside here is typical of the region, with rolling hills covered in vines, olive groves and cypress trees, making it ideal for gentle walks and wine-related excursions. The neighbouring villages of Greve in Chianti and San Casciano in Val di Pesa are close by, while Florence and Siena can both be reached within an hour's drive. The hamlet offers a peaceful base for exploring Chianti, combining winery visits, countryside walks and tastings of local specialities such as olive oil and pecorino cheese.
