Monte San Savino

Monte San Savino is a hilltop town in the Val di Chiana, in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany. Its historic centre, enclosed by medieval walls, features several notable buildings: the Cassero, a fortress remodelled by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, the Palazzo Comunale, and the Loggia dei Mercanti, attributed to the sculptor Andrea Sansovino, who was born in the town that later took his name. The church of Sant'Agostino, with its cloister, adds to this architectural heritage. The town is known for its ceramics tradition and regularly hosts an antiques fair that brings life to the streets of the centre. On the culinary side, the area is known for Chianina beef, pecorino cheese and Tuscan cured meats, best sampled in the local trattorias. Monte San Savino sits in a convenient position between Arezzo, Siena and Cortona, making it a practical base for exploring the Tuscan countryside, its vineyards and neighbouring villages such as Lucignano. The rolling landscape typical of the Val di Chiana provides a pleasant setting for walking and cycling, within an unspoilt rural atmosphere.
