Radda in Chianti

Radda in Chianti is a small medieval town set in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, between Siena and Florence, an area renowned for its rolling vineyard-covered hills and classic Tuscan scenery. The village retains a fortified historic centre, including the old Palazzo del Podestà, decorated with the coats of arms of former local governors, along with narrow lanes ideal for a leisurely stroll. Radda was historically one of the administrative hubs of the Lega del Chianti, a medieval alliance formed between several communities in the area. The surrounding countryside offers excellent opportunities for walking through vineyards and olive groves, with numerous wineries offering tastings of Chianti Classico DOCG, the celebrated wine produced under strict regional regulations. Local cuisine showcases Tuscan staples such as olive oil, cured meats, pecorino cheese, and simple dishes based on game or seasonal vegetables. The area also makes a good base for exploring nearby villages such as Castellina and Gaiole in Chianti. The mild Mediterranean climate, tempered by altitude, makes spring and autumn particularly pleasant times to visit this quieter corner of Tuscany, away from the bustle of larger cities.
