Gaiole in Chianti

Gaiole in Chianti is a town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, set in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region between Siena and Florence. Nestled among vine-covered hills, it was historically one of the three towns of the Lega del Chianti, alongside Radda and Castellina. The surrounding countryside is dotted with medieval castles, including Castello di Brolio, the historic seat of the Ricasoli family and one of the birthplaces of Chianti Classico wine, as well as Castello di Meleto. The area is known for its vineyards, olive groves and the rolling landscapes typical of the Tuscan countryside. Gaiole in Chianti is also recognised as the starting point of L'Eroica, a vintage cycling event that follows partly unpaved roads through the Chianti hills. The village centre, quieter than those of Radda or Castellina, retains a rural, unhurried character, ideal for walking or cycling among vineyards and oak woods. Local specialities include olive oil, Tuscan cured meats and, naturally, the wines of the appellation, which can be sampled at numerous family-run cellars scattered across the municipality.
