Monticiano

Monticiano is a small municipality in the province of Siena, Tuscany, set among the wooded hills of the Merse river valley. The medieval village, with its compact historic centre of narrow cobbled lanes and remnants of old fortifications, retains the quiet character typical of inland Tuscany. The area is best known for its proximity to the Riserva Naturale Alto Merse, a protected reserve of oak woodland and riverside paths ideal for walking, birdwatching and gentle countryside exploration along the Merse river. The surrounding countryside, largely unspoilt, is shaped by rolling hills, forests and farmland, offering a peaceful setting away from the busier tourist routes of nearby Siena, roughly thirty kilometres away. Several farms and agriturismi in the vicinity produce local specialities such as olive oil, honey and Tuscan cured meats. Monticiano makes a calm base for discovering the Sienese countryside, combining protected natural landscapes, small historic villages and regional culinary traditions, well away from the busiest tourist trails of Tuscany.
