Sovicille

Sovicille is a municipality in the province of Siena, Tuscany, located roughly ten kilometres west of the provincial capital, amid the rolling hills typical of the Crete Senesi. The area lies between the Merse and Elsa valleys and includes several hamlets, among them Rosia, Stigliano, Torri, Ponte allo Spino and Brenna. The hamlet of Torri is home to a Romanesque abbey noted for its multi-tiered cloister, one of the notable examples of monastic architecture in the Sienese countryside. The main village still bears traces of a medieval castle overlooking the historic centre. Partly covered by the Alto Merse nature reserve, the municipality offers wooded surroundings well suited to walking and cycling, with paths connecting the various hamlets and the banks of the Merse river. The local economy remains tied to agriculture, particularly olive oil and wine production, both characteristic of the Sienese hills. Its proximity to Siena makes it easy to reach the cathedral, the Palazzo Pubblico and Piazza del Campo, while offering a quieter, greener rural setting to stay in.
