Stazzema

Stazzema is a small municipality in the province of Lucca, Tuscany, tucked into the Apuan Alps just a few kilometres from the Versilia coastline. The wide-ranging communal territory encompasses several stone-built hamlets scattered across mountainous slopes, offering an unspoilt natural setting ideal for hiking and exploring the Apuan Alps Regional Park. The hamlet of Sant'Anna di Stazzema is known for its tragic history: in August 1944, it was the site of a massacre carried out by Nazi troops, now commemorated through a historical museum dedicated to the Resistance and a memorial site visited by many seeking reflection and remembrance. The surrounding area also features hiking trails leading to rocky peaks with views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. The region enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate at altitude, with mild summers and cooler winters than on the nearby coast.
