Seravezza

Seravezza is a town in Tuscany, in the province of Lucca, set at the foot of the Apuan Alps where the Serra and Vezza streams meet, giving the town its name. It has a long-standing connection to marble quarrying: the quarries of Monte Altissimo, worked since the 16th century, notably supplied stone chosen by Michelangelo for his sculptures. The heart of the town is marked by the Palazzo Mediceo, a residence built for Cosimo I de' Medici, which now houses a museum dedicated to local history and the art of marble. The surrounding hamlets, such as Azzano and Cardoso, retain an authentic mountain character, with stone lanes and views over the Apuan peaks. Seravezza's location makes it a convenient base for hill walking while remaining close to the Versilia coast, just a few kilometres from Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, known for their beaches and cultural life. Local cuisine reflects Tuscan tradition, featuring cured meats, olive oil and simple dishes based on regional produce. The Mediterranean climate, softened by the surrounding hills, brings warm summers and mild winters.
