Spigno Monferrato

Spigno Monferrato is a small municipality in Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, tucked within the Alto Monferrato, a hilly wine-growing area recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato landscapes. The village lies along the Bormida di Spigno stream and sits close to the border with Liguria, making it something of a crossing point between the coast and Piedmont's inland countryside. The remains of a mediaeval castle can still be seen, bearing witness to the area's feudal past, once shaped by rivalries between the marquisates of Monferrato. The surrounding countryside is dominated by vineyards producing Dolcetto and Moscato wines, alongside hazelnut groves typical of the Piedmont region. The climate is continental, with warm, dry summers and cooler winters, well suited to long walks through the rolling hills and scattered hamlets nearby. The area appeals mainly for its peaceful rural setting, gentle landscapes and local gastronomy, offering a genuine taste of traditional Piedmontese life away from the busier tourist trails.
