Domodossola

Domodossola is a small town in Piedmont, nestled in the Val d'Ossola at the foot of the Alps, close to the Swiss border and the Simplon Pass. Its historic centre retains a distinctly medieval character, particularly around Piazza Mercato, an arcaded square lined with old houses. The Collegiate Church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius and the Palazzo San Francesco reflect the town's religious and civic heritage. Nearby, the Sacro Monte Calvario, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, features a series of Baroque chapels and views over the valley. Domodossola is also known as the starting point of the Centovalli railway, a scenic line connecting Italy to Locarno in Switzerland through steep, narrow valleys. Local gastronomy highlights mountain produce, alpine cheeses and cured meats typical of the Alpine region. As a historic border town, Domodossola long served as a trading link between Italy and northern Europe via the Simplon Pass, a role that has shaped its urban layout and atmosphere to this day.
