Cortemilia

Cortemilia is a small town in Piedmont, located in the Alta Langa area of Cuneo province, split in two by the Bormida river, which divides its historic districts. This hilly territory, part of the UNESCO World Heritage vineyard landscapes of Piedmont, is well known for its Piedmont IGP hazelnuts, a key ingredient in local cuisine and confectionery, including the region's traditional torrone. The old town retains a medieval tower, a remnant of a former castle, along with narrow lanes and a handful of churches reflecting the area's feudal past. The surrounding hills, covered with hazelnut groves and vineyards, are well suited to walking and cycling, offering views over neighbouring villages in the Alta Langa and Langhe districts. The area enjoys a temperate continental climate, with warm summers and mild autumns, ideal for sampling local produce such as Dolcetto and Barbera wines. Cortemilia makes a peaceful base for exploring rural Piedmont, combining modest architectural heritage, regional gastronomy and well-preserved agricultural landscapes, away from the busier tourist trails found in the region's larger towns.
