Todi

Todi is a small hilltop town in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, perched above the Tiber valley. Its historic centre still shows three successive sets of walls, Etruscan, Roman and medieval, reflecting the town's long history. Piazza del Popolo forms the monumental heart of the town, flanked by the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Capitano, the Palazzo del Popolo and the cathedral. Just outside the walls stands the Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione, a Renaissance church with a centralised plan often linked to Bramante's circle. The steep lanes and views over the surrounding countryside make it a pleasant place for a stroll. Local cuisine draws on typical Umbrian produce such as black truffle, olive oil and regional wines, including Grechetto. Each summer, Todi hosts a cultural festival dedicated to theatre, music and the arts, which brings the town to life for several days. The surrounding countryside, dotted with hills and villages, is well suited to day trips and further exploration of Umbria's heritage.
