Volterra

Volterra is a hilltop medieval town in the province of Pisa, Tuscany, known for its Etruscan and medieval heritage. The ancient Etruscan walls and the Porta all'Arco gate reflect the town's long history, while the Palazzo dei Priori, considered one of the oldest town halls in Tuscany, overlooks Piazza dei Priori. The Roman theatre, the Duomo and the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum, home to an extensive collection of Etruscan cinerary urns, add further cultural depth. Volterra is also well known for its alabaster craftsmanship, a tradition dating back to antiquity and still practised in workshops throughout the old town. On the outskirts, the Balze, dramatic eroded cliffs, create a striking natural landscape. The surrounding countryside is typically Tuscan, with rolling hills covered in vineyards and olive groves, ideal for walks and for sampling local produce such as olive oil and pecorino cheese. Thanks to its central location, Volterra makes a convenient base for exploring San Gimignano, Siena and Pisa, all within an hour's drive.
