Roccalbegna

Roccalbegna is a small medieval village in the province of Grosseto, set within the Tuscan Maremma, in the Albegna Valley close to the Monte Amiata massif. The village is built around a rocky outcrop crowned by the remains of the Rocca Aldobrandesca, a former fortress overlooking the valley, while a second rock formation known as 'Il Sasso' shapes the village's distinctive silhouette. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands as a further testament to the area's religious heritage. Surrounded by wooded hills, the setting is well suited to walking and hiking, particularly towards the nearby Monte Labbro nature reserve, as well as day trips to neighbouring villages such as Santa Fiora and Arcidosso. Local gastronomy reflects the traditions of the Amiata Grossetano area, with chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, cured meats and pecorino cheese central to the rustic cuisine. Roccalbegna remains a quiet, largely untouched destination, valued for its authenticity and unspoilt natural surroundings, well away from Tuscany's busier resorts. The climate is Mediterranean in summer and cooler at altitude, making outdoor activities possible throughout much of the year.
