Arcidosso

Arcidosso is a town in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany, set on the slopes of Monte Amiata at around 700 metres above sea level. Its medieval old town is dominated by the Rocca Aldobrandesca, a fortress reflecting the area's feudal past under the Aldobrandeschi family. The village is also linked to David Lazzaretti, a 19th-century religious reformer and self-proclaimed prophet whose story is closely tied to the Monte Amiata region. Thanks to its location on this extinct volcanic massif, Arcidosso is a popular starting point for walks through chestnut and beech woodland, as well as for year-round outdoor activities, including winter skiing on the nearby slopes. The Monte Amiata Wildlife Park, known for its wolves, lies close by and draws visiting families. Local cuisine centres on chestnuts, porcini mushrooms and traditional Tuscan cured meats. The mid-mountain climate brings cool summers and pronounced winters, typical of Tuscany's inland highlands, making the area suitable for both summer and winter breaks away from the coast.
