Oltrepò Pavese

Oltrepò Pavese is a hilly area in the southern part of the province of Pavia, in Lombardy, well known for its vineyards and wine production. The landscape consists of rolling hills covered with vines, where grape varieties such as Bonarda, Pinot Nero, Riesling and Barbera are grown, giving rise to several DOC appellations. Notable towns include Varzi, famous for its DOP-certified salami, Stradella, historically linked to accordion manufacturing, and Salice Terme, a spa town appreciated for its thermal waters. The countryside is well suited to hiking and cycling routes through vineyards and villages, as well as visits to medieval castles such as those in Zavattarello or Montalto Pavese. Local cuisine features cured meats, cheeses and simple Lombard dishes, often paired with regional wines. The continental climate, with warm summers and cool winters, favours both winemaking and outdoor activities. Less touristy than other Italian wine regions, Oltrepò Pavese offers an authentic rural atmosphere, ideal for quiet stays surrounded by vineyards and gentle hills.
