Chiavenna

Chiavenna is a small town in Lombardy, Italy, situated at the northern tip of Lake Como, close to the Swiss border and the Grisons region. Nestled in the Valchiavenna valley, at the confluence of the Mera and Liro rivers, it has historically served as a gateway to the Splügen and Maloja passes. The town is known for its 'crotti', natural cavities formed within rockslides, traditionally used for ageing cheeses and cured meats, many of which have been converted into small traditional restaurants. The historic centre retains the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo Pretorio, reflecting its medieval past. Nearby, the Marmitte dei Giganti park features glacial potholes carved into the rock, formed by erosion during past glacial periods. Local cuisine highlights polenta taragna, buckwheat-based dishes and the valley's own bresaola. Chiavenna also acts as a starting point for mountain hikes and access to the Val Bregaglia, offering an alpine setting well suited to outdoor activities throughout the year.
