Rapallo

Rapallo is an elegant seaside resort on the Ligurian coast, set on the Gulf of Tigullio, close to Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure. The town is known for its castle standing on the sea, built in the 16th century to defend the harbour from pirate raids, and for its long palm-lined seafront promenade, ideal for strolling and taking in coastal views. The historic centre retains typical narrow lanes, colourful houses and the Basilica of Saints Gervasius and Protasius. A cable car links the town to the Sanctuary of Montallegro, offering panoramic views over the gulf and surrounding hills. Rapallo is also noted for its tradition of bobbin lace-making, a local craft still visible in some shops. The mild Mediterranean climate encourages watersports, swimming and boat trips to nearby coves throughout much of the year. Local cuisine features seafood, Ligurian pesto and focaccia. The town makes a convenient base for exploring the picturesque villages of the Cinque Terre and the Portofino peninsula.
