Bocca di Magra

Bocca di Magra is a hamlet within the municipality of Ameglia, in Liguria's La Spezia province, sitting at the mouth of the River Magra where it flows into the Gulf of La Spezia, also known as the Gulf of Poets. The village stretches along the riverbank, facing Fiumaretta on the opposite side of the estuary, and retains the feel of a small fishing and boating harbour. During the 1950s and 1960s, the area attracted a number of Italian writers and intellectuals, lending it a quiet literary reputation. The Montemarcello-Magra-Vara Regional Nature Park, which protects the river mouth and surrounding hills, lies close by, offering walking trails and coastal viewpoints. The medieval hilltop village of Montemarcello is a short distance away, while Lerici, Portovenere and the Cinque Terre are all within easy reach. Local restaurants specialise in fish and seafood dishes, reflecting the area's maritime traditions. The Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers, well suited to boating, swimming and other seaside pursuits, making Bocca di Magra a peaceful base for exploring this stretch of the Ligurian coast.
