Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, stretches along the River Clyde and combines Victorian heritage with a lively contemporary cultural scene. The West End is home to the University of Glasgow, founded in 1451, as well as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, renowned for its art and natural history collections. Glasgow Cathedral, one of the few religious buildings to survive the Reformation, stands near the historic Merchant City district. The city is also known for its Charles Rennie Mackintosh architecture, a key figure in Scottish Art Nouveau.
