Sesto Calende

Sesto Calende lies at the southern tip of Lake Maggiore, in the province of Varese in Lombardy, precisely where the River Ticino flows out of the lake. The historic centre retains the Abbey of San Donato, a Romanesque building dating from the Middle Ages, along with characteristic lanes overlooking the lake and river banks. The town has historical links to aviation, having hosted seaplane manufacturing during the 20th century. Its strategic location close to Malpensa Airport makes it a convenient gateway for exploring Italy's lake district. The nearby village of Golasecca, which lent its name to an Iron Age archaeological culture, lies just a few kilometres away. Across the lake stands the medieval castle of Angera, the Rocca, visible from Sesto Calende's waterfront. The setting offers opportunities for walks along the lake and river, as well as boat excursions. The climate is mild, with gentle summers shaped by the lake's proximity, typical of the Lombard Pre-Alps.
