Mergozzo (Lago di Mergozzo)

Mergozzo is a small village in Piedmont, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, set on the shores of Lake Mergozzo, just a short distance from Lake Maggiore. Separated from the larger lake by a strip of land formed by alluvial deposits from the River Toce, this smaller lake is known for its remarkably clear waters, as motorboats are banned, making it popular for swimming, canoeing and kayaking amid quiet, wooded hills. The historic centre retains an authentic feel, with stone houses, narrow lanes and the parish church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio. The area has a long history of quartz and feldspar extraction, once used in the ceramics and porcelain industries, a heritage reflected in a small local museum dedicated to minerals. Mergozzo makes a peaceful base for exploring Verbania and the Borromean Islands, offering a quieter alternative to the busier shores of Lake Maggiore. The surrounding countryside also provides walking trails into the nearby hills and valleys, within a mild pre-Alpine lake climate marked by gentle summers and relatively temperate winters.
