Leggiuno

Leggiuno is a small town in the province of Varese, Lombardy, situated on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore. Its main point of interest is the Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso, a medieval hermitage built into the cliffside directly above the lake, with origins dating back to the 13th century. Accessible on foot or by boat, the site draws visitors for its striking architecture and dramatic natural setting. The village itself retains a peaceful character, with traditional houses and narrow lanes leading down to the shoreline. The area benefits from a mild, lake-tempered climate, well suited to water-based activities such as sailing and swimming during the summer months. The surrounding hills offer opportunities for walking and hiking, along with open views across to the Piedmont side of Lake Maggiore. Leggiuno lies close to other lakeside towns such as Laveno-Mombello and Angera, easily reached by car or by boat connections across the lake. The area remains popular for its tranquillity and unspoilt natural surroundings, away from the busier tourist hubs found elsewhere on the lake.
