Ispra

Ispra is a small town in the province of Varese, Lombardy, set on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Its natural surroundings are its main appeal: the calm waters of the lake offer peaceful views over the surrounding Alps and the wooded hills that rise above the area. The town is also known for hosting the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, one of the continent's leading scientific institutions, giving Ispra a character that is both residential and international. The village retains the charm typical of Italian lakeside settlements, with narrow lanes, small squares and a marina where boats can be seen moored along the water's edge. The surrounding area is well suited to walking and cycling along the lakeshore, as well as to day trips to nearby Sesto Calende or Angera, known for its medieval fortress. The mild climate, softened by the lake's presence, supports outdoor activities for much of the year. Ispra therefore makes a quiet base from which to explore Lake Maggiore, away from the busier tourist spots found elsewhere in the region.
