Gravellona Toce

Gravellona Toce is a town in Piedmont, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, situated at the confluence of the Toce and Strona rivers, at a crossroads leading to Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta and the Ossola valley. Its location makes it a convenient base for exploring both lakes, only around ten kilometres apart, as well as Domodossola and the Simplon Pass route into Switzerland. The town underwent industrial development during the 20th century, particularly in metalworking and textiles, before becoming more of a transit and logistics point for visitors to the lakes region. The surrounding countryside displays typical northern Piedmont scenery, with wooded hills, rivers and the first foothills of the Alps leading towards the Monte Rosa massif. The climate is temperate, with mild summers well suited to water-based activities on the nearby lakes and cooler winters influenced by the proximity of the mountains. Gravellona Toce works well as a practical base for day trips to Stresa, the Borromean Islands, Orta San Giulio or the Ossola valleys, though it is not itself a major tourist destination.
