Cannero Riviera

Cannero Riviera is a small village on Lake Maggiore, in Piedmont, known for its notably mild microclimate that allows citrus trees, olives and camellias to flourish along its shores. The village's most distinctive feature is the Castelli di Cannero, the ruins of medieval fortresses standing on small rocky islets just offshore, best viewed from the lakeside promenade or on a short boat trip. The shaded, flower-lined promenade is ideal for a leisurely stroll past cafés and Mediterranean-style gardens. Cannero makes a peaceful base for exploring Lake Maggiore, with the Borromean Islands, Verbania and its botanical villas, and the picturesque old town of Cannobio all within easy reach, as is the Swiss town of Locarno just across the border. Walkers can head into the surrounding hills for views over the lake, while swimming, sailing and cycling along the shoreline are among the area's classic pursuits. The atmosphere here is notably calm and unhurried, offering a quieter alternative to some of the lake's busier resort towns.
