Panicale

Panicale is a hilltop medieval village in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, overlooking Lake Trasimeno. This fortified hamlet, recognised as one of Italy's most beautiful villages, is notable for its stone architecture and narrow, cobbled lanes winding in concentric circles up to the summit, along with its distinctively shaped main square, Piazza Umberto I. The village houses a small historic theatre, the Teatro Caporali, as well as religious buildings containing works linked to the Umbrian school of painting, including influences from Perugino. Panicale is also associated with the painter Masolino da Panicale, who was born in the area. From the old walls and higher points of the village, views stretch across the surrounding countryside and towards Lake Trasimeno, just a few kilometres away. The surrounding landscape is typical of Umbria, with olive groves and vineyards covering the hills, ideal for walking and sampling local produce such as olive oil and regional wines. Panicale makes a peaceful base for exploring Lake Trasimeno and the neighbouring villages of this part of central Italy.
