Magione

Magione is a town in the province of Perugia, in Umbria, set on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in peninsular Italy. The town is dominated by the Castello dei Cavalieri di Malta, a former commandery of the Knights of Malta, which reflects its medieval past. The surrounding area gives access to Isola Polvese, the largest of the lake's islands, now a nature and science park where visitors can walk among olive groves, woodland and the remains of an old abbey. The region is also linked to ancient history, as Lake Trasimeno was the setting for clashes during the Punic Wars. Umbria's mild climate makes it well suited to outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling along the shoreline, boating and fishing, with lake carp and pike among the local specialities, alongside Umbrian olive oil. Magione makes a convenient base for exploring Perugia, Assisi and the villages dotted around Lake Trasimeno, within a still largely rural and unspoilt setting.
