Lago Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno, the fourth largest lake in Italy, lies in the Umbria region, not far from Perugia. Shallow and framed by gentle hills, it offers a tranquil landscape well suited to nature-based stays. Three islands dot its waters: Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese and the smaller Isola Minore, all reachable by boat from the shore. The surrounding villages, including Castiglione del Lago, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Tuoro sul Trasimeno, retain a medieval character with narrow lanes, old walls and lakeside viewpoints. Tuoro is notably linked to the Battle of Lake Trasimene in 217 BC, when Hannibal defeated the Roman legions nearby. Local cuisine features tinca (tench) from the lake and fagiolina del Trasimeno, a small local bean variety. The area is well suited to walking, cycling around the lake and sailing, thanks to a mild climate for much of the year. Perugia, the regional capital, and Città della Pieve are both within easy reach for additional cultural excursions.
