Castiglione del Lago

Castiglione del Lago is located in Umbria, on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in central Italy. The historic town sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the water, with a medieval centre built around the Rocca del Leone fortress and the Palazzo della Corgna, both linked to the town's history under the Della Corgna family. Cobbled lanes, defensive walls and lake views define the old quarter. The town is known for hosting an international kite festival, Coloriamo i Cieli, held each spring along the lakeshore. Local cuisine showcases produce from Lake Trasimeno, particularly freshwater fish such as carp and tench, often served in a stew called tegamaccio. The lake itself offers plenty of outdoor pursuits, including swimming, fishing, sailing and cycling routes along the shoreline. Boat services from the harbour connect to the lake's islands, including Isola Maggiore. Set at the border between Umbria and Tuscany, the surrounding area makes a convenient base for day trips to Perugia, Cortona or Assisi, all within a reasonable drive.
