Osteno

Osteno is a small village within the municipality of Claino con Osteno, in the province of Como, Lombardy, set on the eastern shore of Lake Lugano close to the Swiss border. The village is best known for the Grotte di Rescia, a natural karst cave partly filled with water, which can be visited by boat departing from the small local harbour. Osteno retains the feel of a traditional fishing village, with a lakeside promenade lined with restaurants serving freshwater fish specialities, including missoltino. Its location makes it a convenient base for boat trips to Lugano or Porlezza, as well as for exploring both the Swiss and Italian shores of the lake. The surrounding mountainous countryside, dominated by Monte Generoso, offers hiking routes and panoramic views over the lake and the Alps.
