Côme

Situated on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, the town of Como is set within a striking natural landscape of lake and pre-Alpine mountains. The historic centre, enclosed by medieval walls, houses the Como Cathedral (Duomo), blending Gothic and Renaissance styles, alongside the neighbouring Broletto and the Romanesque Basilica of Sant'Abbondio. A funicular railway connects the town to Brunate, a hillside village offering panoramic views over the lake and surrounding Alps. The lakeside promenade, lined with gardens, features the Tempio Voltiano, a monument dedicated to Alessandro Volta, who was born in the town. Como is also known for its long-standing textile and silk industry, whose history is documented at the Silk Museum. Local cuisine includes freshwater fish specialities such as whitefish and shad, alongside traditional Lombard dishes. The town is often used as a starting point for exploring nearby lakeside villages such as Bellagio and Varenna, reachable by boat. The temperate, lake-moderated climate makes it a pleasant destination to visit from spring through autumn.
