Tarnos

Tarnos is a town in the Landes department, located at the southern tip of the Aquitaine coastline, just north of the mouth of the Adour river and only a few kilometres from Bayonne, Anglet and Biarritz. Its position on the border with the Pyrénées-Atlantiques makes it a convenient base for exploring the Basque Country while enjoying the relative tranquillity of the Landes. The town has direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, with beaches such as Sables d'Or popular for swimming and surfing, a sport widely practised along this stretch of coast. Inland, the Landes forest offers pleasant walking and cycling routes, including paths connecting Tarnos to neighbouring towns. Bayonne's historic centre, cathedral and covered market are within easy reach, while Biarritz provides a livelier seafront and well-established seaside facilities. The mild, humid oceanic climate supports lush vegetation and temperate summers. Tarnos retains a residential and industrial character, shaped by its local economic history, while serving as a practical starting point for discovering the Basque-Landes coastline and the Spanish border, around thirty kilometres away.
