Ste-Marie-du-Mont

Sainte-Marie-du-Mont is a village in the Manche department of Normandy, located on the Cotentin peninsula near the Baie des Veys. It is closely linked to Utah Beach, one of the five Allied landing sectors of 6 June 1944, whose coastline lies within the commune. The Utah Beach D-Day Museum, built right on the beach, traces this historic episode through tanks, period vehicles and military artefacts. The village itself retains a Romanesque church and typical rural Cotentin heritage, surrounded by marshland and wet meadows that attract birdwatchers. The area is largely agricultural, shaped by cattle farming and dairy production characteristic of this part of Normandy. Nearby visitors can easily reach other D-Day beaches, military cemeteries and memorial sites, as well as landscapes of hedgerow countryside and sandy coastline. The proximity of Sainte-Mère-Église, famous for the American airborne operations, adds further historical interest to the area. Tourism here is mainly centred on Second World War remembrance, nature and the quiet charm of the Normandy countryside.
