San Giovanni

San Giovanni Valdarno is a town in Tuscany, in the province of Arezzo, set in the Arno valley between Florence and Arezzo. It is best known as the birthplace of the painter Masaccio, a key figure of the early Italian Renaissance, commemorated today by a cultural centre in the historic centre. The town retains notable architecture, including the Palazzo d'Arnolfo, a public building traditionally attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, and the Basilica di San Lorenzo. San Giovanni Valdarno also underwent significant industrial development during the 20th century, linked to lignite mining and steelworking, giving it a character somewhat different from the more rural image of the surrounding countryside. It serves as a convenient base for exploring the Valdarno area, with its rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves typical of Tuscany. Its proximity to Florence, Arezzo and Siena, all within an hour's drive, makes it a practical starting point for discovering the region while avoiding the crowds of the larger nearby cities. The Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters, makes it suitable for visits throughout the year.
