Prato

Prato, in Tuscany, is the region's second-largest city after Florence, lying just twenty kilometres away. Its historic centre, encircled by medieval walls, houses the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, famous for its external pulpit adorned with bas-reliefs by Donatello, as well as the Castello dell'Imperatore, a rare example of Swabian architecture in central Italy. The city has long been linked to the textile industry, a trade dating back to the Middle Ages that has shaped both its urban fabric and economy; the Museo del Tessuto traces this heritage. The Palazzo Datini, former home of merchant Francesco di Marco Datini, is another reminder of Prato's past commercial wealth. The city is well suited to wandering through its narrow streets and lively squares, such as Piazza del Duomo. Prato also serves as a convenient base for exploring Tuscany, with easy access to Florence, Pistoia and the surrounding hills. Its Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, makes it suitable for visits throughout much of the year. Local specialities, particularly cantucci biscuits, add further interest to the destination.
