St-Sauveur-le-Vicomte

Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte is a small town in the Manche department, on the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, crossed by the River Douve. The town is dominated by its medieval castle, altered over the centuries, which now houses a museum dedicated to the writer Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, who was born locally. Nearby stand the remains of the former Notre-Dame abbey, a reminder of the area's religious past. The town also played a part in the Battle of Cotentin in June 1944 during the Second World War, and several memorial sites recall this period of Liberation. The surrounding countryside, typical of Normandy's bocage landscape with hedgerows, damp meadows and small valleys, is well suited to walking and exploring the natural surroundings of the Cotentin. The town itself retains a traditional Norman character, with stone houses and a local market. Thanks to its central position on the peninsula, it makes a convenient base for visiting the D-Day beaches, Valognes or Cherbourg, while enjoying a peaceful and authentic setting away from the busier coastal resorts.
