St-Florent

Saint-Florent is a town in northern Corsica, in Haute-Corse, set at the head of its namesake gulf, between the Désert des Agriates and the vine-covered hills of the Nebbio region. Once a fishing village, it has become a popular marina for yachting, built around a 15th-century Genoese citadel overlooking the harbour and the cobbled streets of the old town. Nearby stands the Nebbio Cathedral, Santa Maria Assunta, a Romanesque building in white limestone that reflects Pisan influence on the island. The area is known for its Patrimonio AOC vineyards, spread across the surrounding hillsides. The Désert des Agriates, a protected natural area, can be explored on foot via the coastal customs path or by boat, leading to Saleccia beach, noted for its fine sand and clear waters. The local market and harbourside terraces bring life to the village, especially during the summer months. With its Mediterranean climate, sheltered coves along the gulf, and nearby walking trails, Saint-Florent serves as a well-regarded base for exploring northern Corsica, combining sea, vineyards and maquis scrubland.
