Fucecchio

Fucecchio is a town in Tuscany, in the province of Florence, set between the hills of the lower Valdarno and the extensive Padule di Fucecchio wetland, one of Italy's largest inland nature reserves, popular for birdwatching and countryside walks. The hilltop historic centre retains medieval lanes, remnants of old fortifications and the church of San Salvatore. The town is also known as the birthplace of journalist Indro Montanelli, and the Fondazione Montanelli Bassi hosts cultural events in his memory. Economically, the area is tied to Tuscany's leather-working tradition, particularly around nearby Santa Croce sull'Arno. Its location makes it a convenient base for exploring Florence, Pisa, Lucca and San Miniato, while offering a quieter, more rural setting than the region's major tourist hubs. The mild Mediterranean climate allows visits throughout much of the year, with hot, dry summers and gentle winters typical of the Tuscan countryside, making it well suited to travellers seeking an authentic, less crowded base in central Tuscany.
