Borgo San Lorenzo

Borgo San Lorenzo is the main town of the Mugello, a hilly area north of Florence province, crossed by the Sieve river. Rebuilt after the 1919 earthquake in an Art Nouveau style still visible on several façades in the historic centre, the town retains the Romanesque Pieve di San Lorenzo church and the Palazzo Pretorio. It is also known for its ceramic tradition, linked to the former Chini kilns, whose Art Nouveau pieces are displayed at Villa Pecori Giraldi, now a municipal museum. The surrounding countryside, with its hills, olive groves and woodland, is well suited to walking and cycling, and remains known for local produce such as olive oil and chestnuts. Nearby lies the Mugello Circuit, an internationally known motor-racing track located in the neighbouring municipality of Scarperia. Borgo San Lorenzo therefore makes a convenient base for exploring the Mugello area, around thirty kilometres from Florence, combining local heritage, craftsmanship and typical Tuscan landscapes.
