St-Paul-de-Vence

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a hilltop medieval village in the Alpes-Maritimes, just a short drive from Vence, Cagnes-sur-Mer and the Bay of Nice. Enclosed by its 16th-century ramparts, it retains cobbled lanes, vaulted passageways and stone houses typical of the Provençal hinterland. The village is well known for its artistic heritage: numerous painters and writers stayed here during the 20th century, drawn in part by the Colombe d'Or inn, noted for its collection of artwork. The village cemetery holds the grave of Marc Chagall. Nearby, the Fondation Maeght displays a collection of modern and contemporary art within a notable architectural setting. Art galleries, craft workshops and small shops now line the streets of the historic centre. A walk along the ramparts offers open views over the surrounding countryside, dotted with olive trees, cypresses and vineyards. The Mediterranean climate, mild for much of the year, encourages leisurely walks and exploration of the local heritage. The area also makes a convenient base for visiting the French Riviera and neighbouring hilltop villages.
