Strongoli

Strongoli is a small town in Calabria, in the province of Crotone, perched on a hill overlooking the Ionian coast. The settlement, of ancient origin and long identified with the historic city of Petelia, retains a historic centre with narrow lanes and a medieval castle that reflects its former strategic importance. The cathedral and several religious buildings punctuate the townscape, offering a glimpse into Calabria's layered history of Greek, Roman and Norman influences. The lower part of town, Strongoli Marina, provides access to the sandy beaches of the Ionian Sea, popular for swimming and water sports during the summer months. The surrounding countryside is shaped by Mediterranean agriculture, with a notable local wine production, including a grape variety recognised regionally, as well as olive oil. The Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer and mild in winter, makes the area worth visiting throughout the year. Strongoli offers a convenient base for exploring Ionian Calabria, combining historical heritage, hillside landscapes and coastline, within easy reach of other coastal towns and regional archaeological sites.
