Lucignano

Lucignano is a small medieval town in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany, nestled between the Val di Chiana and the Sienese hills. Its distinctive feature is an unusual elliptical town plan, with concentric lanes winding up towards the historic centre, making for a picturesque and pleasant stroll. The town retains notable architecture, including the Collegiata San Michele Arcangelo, the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Pretorio. The Civic Museum houses the Albero d'Oro, a fourteenth-century gold and silver reliquary regarded as one of the region's finest examples of goldsmith work. Each spring, the Maggiolata Lucignanese fills the streets with flower-decorated floats and costumed parades, a well-established local tradition. The surrounding countryside offers classic Tuscan scenery, with vineyards, olive groves and small farms ideal for walking or cycling. Local cuisine showcases regional produce such as olive oil, wine from the nearby Chianti area, and traditional Tuscan cured meats. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, makes the town pleasant to visit for much of the year, particularly during spring and autumn.
