Cortona

Perched on the slopes of the Apennines, Cortona overlooks the Val di Chiana valley, between Tuscany and Umbria, just a few kilometres from Lake Trasimeno. This former Etruscan and later medieval town retains sections of its ancient walls and a historic centre of steep, cobbled lanes typical of Tuscany's hilltop settlements. Notable sites include Piazza della Repubblica, the Palazzo Comunale, the cathedral, the sanctuary dedicated to Saint Margaret of Cortona, and the Medici-era Girifalco fortress, which offers views across the surrounding valley. The Etruscan Academy Museum (MAEC) houses local archaeological collections. Cortona gained wider recognition through Frances Mayes's memoir, later adapted into the film 'Under the Tuscan Sun'. The surrounding countryside, dotted with vineyards and olive groves, produces wines under the Cortona DOC label as well as extra virgin olive oil. Local cuisine is known for Chianina beef, a prized regional breed. The town serves as a convenient base for exploring Arezzo, Siena and neighbouring Umbria.
