Castiglion Fiorentino

Castiglion Fiorentino is a small medieval hill town in Tuscany, in the province of Arezzo, overlooking the Val di Chiana valley. Its historic centre retains a characteristic layout of cobbled lanes, stone steps and vaulted passageways. Piazza del Municipio is lined by the Loggiati, a loggia attributed to Giorgio Vasari, while the Torre del Cassero, a remnant of the medieval fortress, offers views over the surrounding countryside. The Collegiata di San Giuliano and the Pinacoteca Comunale house religious artworks and local collections. The town lies close to Cortona and Arezzo, two major regional attractions easily reached for day trips. The surrounding countryside, typical of the Val di Chiana, is known for wine and olive oil production, as well as for breeding the Chianina cattle, the basis of several traditional Tuscan dishes. The rolling landscape, dotted with cypress trees and vineyards, is well suited to walking, cycling and visits to local farms. The Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild winters, makes spring and autumn particularly pleasant times to explore the area.
