Anghiari

Anghiari is a medieval hilltop town in Tuscany, in the province of Arezzo, overlooking the Tiber valley (Valtiberina). Its remarkably well-preserved historic centre features cobbled lanes, stone stairways and old town walls with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. The town is best known for the Battle of Anghiari in 1440, famously the subject of a now-lost work by Leonardo da Vinci; the Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari tells the story of this event and the town's local history. Anghiari is also recognised for its long-standing tradition of craftsmanship, particularly fine furniture-making and woodwork passed down through generations of artisans. Piazza Baldaccio and the church of Sant'Agostino are among the centre's notable sights. The town makes a peaceful base for exploring eastern Tuscany, within easy reach of Sansepolcro, Arezzo and neighbouring Umbria, set amid the rolling hills typical of the region and well suited to countryside walks and sampling local produce such as olive oil, cured meats and Tuscan wines.
