St Laurent-sur-Mer

Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer is a small town in Calvados, Normandy, situated on the stretch of coastline known as Omaha Beach, the site of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944. The village remains deeply linked to this history, with wartime bunkers, memorials and information panels dotted along the seafront recalling the fighting that took place there. A few minutes away lies the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, one of the region's most visited memorial sites. The beach itself, a long stretch of fine sand, is well suited to walking and, in season, swimming, offering a peaceful setting that contrasts with its turbulent past. The village itself is modest in size, with a handful of shops, restaurants and places to stay catering mainly to visitors coming to pay their respects or learn about the landings. The surrounding Normandy countryside, with its hedgerows, cliffs and small harbours, makes for pleasant day trips to Bayeux, Arromanches or Port-en-Bessin. The oceanic climate, cool and often damp, brings mild summers and temperate winters, ideal for long coastal walks.
