Quinson

Quinson is a village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, located at the entrance to the lower Verdon gorges, within the 04500 postcode area. The village is chiefly known for the Museum of Prehistory of the Verdon Gorges, a modern building designed by architect Norman Foster, which traces the history of prehistoric settlement in the region through archaeological collections. Nearby, Lake Quinson, formed by the Verdon river, offers swimming, canoeing and various water sports within a dramatic setting of limestone cliffs. The village retains a distinctly Provençal character, with narrow lanes, stone houses and the remains of a château overlooking the rooftops. The surrounding landscape, shaped by scrubland, wooded hills and a Mediterranean climate, is well suited to walking and exploring the gorges on foot or by boat. Quinson serves as a convenient base for discovering the lower Verdon gorges, quieter than the main canyon further upstream, offering visitors a peaceful setting rich in natural scenery and Provençal heritage.
